On Tuesday, President Donald Trump and top AI leaders announced a signed pledge called a “Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities” — a voluntary promise to implement more controls and safety measures as the rapid development of artificial intelligence continues.
But there seems to be a catch — namely that the “United States” was misspelled as “Unites States” in a photo of the signed agreement the President shared to Truth Social. The spelling error appears right beneath the president’s signature, though the other signatories and their companies are spelled correctly. Gizmodo reporter Matt Novak was one of the first to point out the snafu, and we’ve reached out to the White House for comment.
The spelling error shows, perhaps, how much time and attention went into drafting the document before it was signed and released to the public. Its announcement came after top AI leaders, including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, once again descended upon the White House to talk about advancements in AI. The gathering came just weeks after OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Amodei, and even Elon Musk called for a deceleration of AI advancements, calls that President Trump and Huang rejected. “We’re the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins,” the President previously said.
It seems the meet-in-the-middle was this pledge, which mapped out the ways that companies training and deploying frontier models should “ensure that their technology behaves as intended and that any issues are promptly identified and resolved.” This includes tapping an independent board for oversight and implementing internal controls. The pledge is voluntary, and there don’t seem to be any legal or regulatory ramifications if any signee breaks it.
At a press conference after the gathering Tuesday, Zuckerberg called the accord a “start” that the “whole industry could come to,” adding that “it was sort of a historic conversation.”
Via an executive order, the President is also mandating that all government departments and agencies now change their phrasing from “artificial intelligence” to “superintelligence” or “SI.”
