Anthropic Claude Code: A Step-by-Step Guide to Your First Real Task

Last Tuesday, I spent 20 minutes staring at a Python function that was supposed to parse CSV files but kept choking on quoted fields. A colleague suggested I try Anthropic Claude Code. Ten minutes later, the bug was fixed, tests were passing, and I had a better understanding of the code. This isn’t autocomplete on steroids. It’s a terminal-based AI agent that can read your files, write code, run commands, and iterate until the job is done. If you’ve heard about it but haven’t tried it, this guide walks you through a real task from setup to solution.

What you need before you start

Claude Code runs in your terminal, so you’ll need a few things:

    • Node.js version 18 or later.
    • An Anthropic API key (you can get one from the Anthropic Console).
    • A codebase you don’t mind an AI reading. It works best on projects with clear structure and tests.

If you want a broader overview of what Claude Code is and why it’s different from other AI coding tools, the terminal-based AI coder guide is a good starting point.

    Step 1: Install and authenticate

    Open your terminal and run:

    npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

Once installed, start it with the claude command. You’ll be prompted to authenticate. The easiest way is to set your API key as an environment variable:

    export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="your-key-here"

Then run claude again. You should see a prompt where you can type natural language instructions. That’s it—no configuration files, no IDE plugins.

    Step 2: Your first interaction

Navigate to a project directory. For this example, I’ll use a small Node.js project with a parser.js file that has a bug. Start Claude Code and ask it to explain the file:

claude> Explain what src/utils/parser.js does and identify any potential bugs.

Claude Code will read the file, summarize its purpose, and point out issues. In my case, it noticed that the CSV parser didn’t handle quoted fields containing commas. It didn’t just say “there’s a bug.” It showed the exact line and suggested a fix. You can then say:

claude> Refactor the parseCSV function to correctly handle quoted fields. Then run the existing tests.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Claude Code proposes a diff, asks for your approval, applies the change, and runs your test suite. If tests fail, it reads the error output and tries again. You’re not copying and pasting from a chat window; the agent is doing the work in your actual environment.

Step 3: Use it for debugging and feature work

Let’s say you have a failing test. Instead of manually tracing the issue, you can delegate it:

claude> The test 'handles quoted fields' is failing. Find the root cause and fix it.

Claude Code will run the test, read the failure, inspect the relevant code, and propose a fix. It might also add a new test case to prevent regression. This iterative loop—run, observe, adjust—is where the tool shines. It’s like pair programming with someone who never gets tired of running npm test.

For feature work, be specific. Instead of “add authentication,” try: “Add JWT-based authentication to the Express app. Use the existing User model and write tests for the login and signup routes.” The more context you provide, the better the result.

Step 4: Advanced tips for smoother sessions

After a few sessions, you’ll develop a rhythm. These practices help:

    • Review diffs before committing. Claude Code shows you what it plans to change. Read it. It’s usually right, but you’re still the engineer.
    • Use custom commands. You can create reusable prompts in a .claude/commands directory. For example, a /review command that runs a security check on the current diff.
    • Switch models for the task. Use --model claude-3-5-sonnet for speed on simple edits, and --model claude-3-opus for complex refactoring that needs deeper reasoning.
    • Keep your test suite fast. Claude Code runs tests frequently. If your suite takes minutes, it will feel sluggish. A focused test file helps.

One more thing: usage limits have been changing. Anthropic recently raised Claude Code usage limits after a new deal, so heavy users have more room. Still, keep an eye on your token consumption.

Step 5: A repeatable workflow for any task

Here’s a pattern I use for almost every ticket:

    1. Start with a clear description of the goal and the files involved.
    2. Ask Claude Code to propose a plan before writing code. “Outline the changes needed to add pagination to the /users endpoint.”
    3. Approve the plan, then let it implement and run tests.
    4. If tests fail, tell it to fix the failure and rerun.
    5. Review the final diff, then commit.

This loop works because Claude Code maintains context across the session. It remembers the files it read, the commands it ran, and the errors it saw. You’re not repeating yourself.

Of course, the tool isn’t flawless. It can hallucinate a function that doesn’t exist or miss edge cases. That’s why the review step matters. And if you’re curious about where Anthropic is taking the product, the source leak reveals some of Anthropic’s plans for future features.

One last practical note: plan availability can shift. Anthropic even tested removing Claude Code from the Pro plan at one point, so if you’re on a Pro subscription, double-check that it’s still included. The API route is more predictable.
