Every time you ask a chatbot a question, you’re handing over more than just a few words. Your IP address, your browser details, and your entire chat history often get stored in a server somewhere. Duck.ai takes a completely different approach. It’s a free, anonymous chat portal that bundles several popular AI models into one interface, with no account needed. You pick a model, type, and get an answer. That’s it.

If you’re new to the concept, our earlier article on the private AI chat portal explains the basics. Here’s how it works in practice, what it does well, and where it falls short.

    What Is Duck.ai?

Duck.ai is a project from DuckDuckGo, a company known for its privacy-focused search engine. The idea is simple: give people access to powerful AI chatbots without sacrificing their privacy. At its core, it’s a gateway. You open the website and see a clean chat window with a dropdown menu at the top. That menu lets you switch between models like GPT-4o mini, Claude 3 Haiku, Llama 3.1, and Mistral 8x7B.

When you send a message, DuckDuckGo acts as a proxy. It removes your IP address and any identifying metadata before forwarding the request to whatever model you’ve selected. The response comes back to you, and the model’s provider has no idea who you are. There’s no account, no profile, and no chat history stored on your device.

    How Duck.ai Works

    No Sign-Up, No History

You’ve probably been trained to expect a “Create account” button on every AI tool. Duck.ai skips that entirely. You can start chatting immediately. But the trade-off is that there’s no conversation history. If you close the tab, your messages are gone. That can be frustrating if you’re used to scrolling back through old chats, but it’s also the very thing that makes the service so private.

Which AI Models Can You Use?

One of the biggest selling points is the variety. Instead of being locked into a single company’s model, you get a choice. Here’s what’s available at the time of writing:

    • GPT-4o mini – OpenAI’s lightweight model. It handles coding questions, summaries, and everyday tasks with surprising speed.
    • Claude 3 Haiku – Anthropic’s compact model, which tends to produce clearer, more measured writing than its competitors.
    • Llama 3.1 70B – Meta’s open-source model, a good all-rounder for general knowledge and reasoning.
    • Mistral 8x7B – A French model that’s efficient and quick. For a deeper look at this family, our guide to Mistral’s Le Chat assistant shows what the company has been building.

Each model has a slightly different personality, so it’s worth testing all of them to see which one matches your tone.

    Why Duck.ai Is Gaining Traction

People are increasingly uncomfortable with how AI companies harvest their data. Google has been weaving AI results into search, and many users aren’t happy about it. The backlash is measurable: DuckDuckGo installs are up 30% as people look for alternatives. Duck.ai fits right into this trend. It offers a way to use AI chat without the feeling that your every query is being logged and sold.

It also appeals to people who simply don’t want to create yet another online account. No email, no password, no “I agree to let you train on my chats” checkbox. That’s a small but meaningful barrier to entry, and Duck.ai removes it completely.

    Duck.ai vs. Using ChatGPT Directly

You might wonder why you wouldn’t just open ChatGPT and start typing. The obvious difference is privacy. When you use ChatGPT, you’re signing into an account, and OpenAI retains your conversations. Duck.ai puts a wall between you and the model. Your chat isn’t tied to your identity, and it isn’t used to train the AI.

But there are downsides. Duck.ai doesn’t support file uploads, voice input, or custom instructions. You also get a smaller, faster version of GPT-4, not the full model. The daily message limit is another factor. Free users get around 20 messages per day across all models, so it’s not something you can rely on for heavy research. Paying $10 a month for Duck.ai Pro removes many of those limits, but that’s a decision you’ll have to make based on how often you plan to use it.

    Who Should Use Duck.ai?

Privacy advocates will obviously love it, but the audience is wider than that. Journalists and researchers can ask sensitive questions without worrying about a paper trail. Students who need a quick answer for a homework problem can get it without signing up. And if you’re curious about AI but don’t want to be tied to one ecosystem, this is a low-effort way to sample different models.

That said, if you’re looking for a more conversational companion, you might prefer a dedicated assistant. Pi AI, for example, is built to listen and respond with emotional intelligence. We’ve covered it in our Pi AI review if that sounds more like what you need.

Practical Tips for Getting the Most Out of Duck.ai

To get real value from this tool, keep a few things in mind:

    • Pick the right model. Claude 3 Haiku is great for writing and brainstorming. GPT-4o mini handles code and logic best. For quick factual lookups, Llama 3.1 is reliable.
    • Copy important answers immediately. Since there’s no history, you’ll lose everything when you leave the page.
    • Watch your daily limit. The counter resets every 24 hours, so if you run out, you can either switch models or wait.
    • Use it for sensitive topics. Health questions, legal inquiries, or anything you wouldn’t want linked to your name are perfect candidates.
    • Combine with the DuckDuckGo browser extension. The extension adds a shortcut to Duck.ai, making anonymous chat one click away.

Duck.ai isn’t a perfect replacement for a full-featured AI assistant. But as a private, easy-to-use gateway to multiple models, it does something that almost nothing else does.
